"How's the house," you ask!!!

The inspiration as to why we went to Meteor Crater at all was that we had an appointment to pick out our colors for our new house and we figured that we would not be back before school got out (and we were very right, we did not get home until 7:30). Anyway, after going to Meteor Crater we met with a few subcontractors and the general contractor to go over some things that we want to make sure we have. Picking out the colors of the house was a bit tricky since it was done in three different places and no one knows what "standard" really is, and therefore has no idea of what an "upgrade" would be. Did end up picking the stucco and trim color, mostly cause they were in the same place. We picked a carpet but not a linoleum (I'll get to the reason why in a minute). We talked to the cabinet guy but since there is not really a "standard" cause the guy can get whatever, we really don't know what we are going to do with that. I told him I would really like knotty alder (like what we had in our second house in Utah), and he said that he would draw up a plan of how he would do it and then we could decide if we want to do that or some other variation. So since we really don't know what color cabinets we are going to have we have not picked a countertop color, or the linoleum color. Which now that I type about it, really does not matter too much. The point is that I am in search of opinions and I know you all have them. If you were having a house built what colors would you choose? Would you do both floor and counter dark? Both light? One of each? If so, which one? The linoleum that we like is dark with a slate-like pattern to it, but what do I put with it? Or do I stay away from such a dark flooring? So many questions and I would love you all to leave your comments. Yes, that means you!

Here is a picture of the "foundation." It is done with a system called helical piers. It sounds very interesting. Basically the idea is that when the earth moves, the house will not. I don't know about you, but that sounds good to me.

Here is an up close picture of one of our "upgrades." We had them dig our crawl space a bit deeper (they did 6 feet, I think) in a 20x20 foot section and then poor a cement slab and a 3' retaining wall so we will have what we are calling a cellar for food storage. We are very excited about this feature.

We found out that the house could be done as soon as the middle of March. Whoa!!! We were not expecting that, we were expecting May. Of course what is said and what is done are two different things. Either way we are really excited for the whole thing.

granite counter tops with built in butcher blocks. oh and there should be a hole under the blocks so you can sweep the food scraps into a compost bucket.

Alder is a light wood (unless of course you have it stained darker) so going dark on the countertop and flooring would provide a contrast. I noticed you didn't mention wall color, do you have one already? Are you just planning on some variation of white? If your cabinets are light and your counter and flooring are dark I would pick something in the middle for the wall color, but then again I hate white walls, but that's just me. I'd pick a yellow, green, or an orange, not bright ones, but like rustic and subdued versions of those colors.

I don't know if you saw the table Kevin made while you were here, but it had an alder top and the bottom was stained black. They look very good together so that might give you an idea of the light cabinets against dark flooring.

What is the counter made of? Linoleum also? If you can I'd pick a textured linoleum for the counter, they look cooler since they give the counter depth. And in a perfect world it could have tiny little flecks of the wall color you choose, but not enough to make it obvious until you look really closely.

There's my two cents, make of it what you will and good luck with the house.

Okay, so I am liking the comments so far. We would totally go granite if we had the money, but since we don't right now we are going to have to save that for another year. The countertop will be a formica, so again cheap. We are having the builder paint the walls white (because it does not cost us anything). We will paint the wall eventually, I just may have Kevin & Sarah come over and tell me how to do it, or just do it for me. We will probably put a golden stain on the wood, but nothing too dark because I don't want it dark. Sarah, you are right about the table Kevin made, it does look good. Knowing that that is alder, is good information. I would totally love to have built in butcher blocks and a hole for the food scraps, but alas we don't have the cash for that either. Amy, we would totally love to have you come over when we move in, when is spring break for you guys? So everyone else you are more than welcome to leave more comments.

when you do go for the granite counter have a look at "blue pearl" or "emerald pearl"

I'm going to disagree with sarah on the textured counter top. way too many places for food stuffs to get trapped. that is why tiles on a counter is a bad idea.

at any rate it sounds like it's going to be a nice place to live, and for us to visit :)
